John and George Howes Spanish American War letters collection, 1898.

This collection consists of 14 letters from John and George Howes, two soldiers in the Spanish-American War from Louisville, Kentucky, to their parents, written from July 5, 1898 to November 25, 1898. There are ten letters from John to his father, Rev. C.J. Howes, and four letters from George to his mother, Mrs. C.J. Howes. Also included in the collection are four empty envelopes addressed to Rev. Howes from John, dating from October and November 1898, and one empty envelope addressed to Mrs. Howes, dating from September 1898. These letters describe daily life in camp during the Spanish-American War, both in the United States, on a troop ship headed to Puerto Rico, and in Puerto Rico after an armistice has been declared. Both John and George also express frustration with the conduct of their commanding officers throughout their time of service. The collection is 0.5 cubic feet.
